Yue Desserts

No one hates dessert. However, Yue desserts are different from western desserts. While western most desserts are sweets, such as: cakes, donuts, ice cream, etc., Yue desserts vary from Gao Dian and Hot and Cold Desserts. However, the most common dessert after a meal is Tong Sui. It is translated as “sugar water”. It is basically a sweet soup or custard that is served after dinner. Cha Chaan Teng 茶餐廳

Cha Chaan Teng means Tea Meal Restaurant (茶餐廳). It is well known for it’s cheap menu and fast pace environment. It is perfect for people who work because you have minimal time to eat lunch. Most of the Cha Chaan Teng do deliveries now and they normally have an afternoon tea set menu which is cheaper. This type of restaurant is the mixture or fusion of western and yue food. Since British Colonized Hong Kong, the British brought western food over and these Cha Chaan Teng started to come out and became fairly popular.

How to make Steamed Egg with Minced Pork (肉粒蒸蛋)

This is one of the easiest, and tasty recipes that I’ve learned to cook from my mom. It could be prepared with your rice or with a steamer/pot. It goes super well with rice and could be made in big portions for a larger family. It is a fairly cheap dish costing less than $4 USD to make.

Dim Sum

Dim Sum is one of the biggest parts of Yue Dining. Most people do not know what Yue Cuisine is but they would know Dim Sum. It is fairly popular amongst the foreigners also. Dim Sum are bite size snacks that are mostly steamed, fried or baked. Few popular Dim Sum are the Har Gao, Siu Mai and Cha Siu Bao. Traditionally, a variety of Dim Sum will be pushed to you in carts and you get to choose what you want to eat. These carts still exists in a lot of Yue Cuisines, but in order to be cost efficient and safer, some restaurant just serve the Dim Sum straight to the table in some restaurants.

Popular Yue Tea

Tea is what Chinese people drink to accompany a meal. It has thousand years of history and has been drank even before the beginning of the dynasties. When you go to a Yue Cuisine, after you sat down, you always hear “what tea would you like to drink?”. This is like when you go to a American Restaurant and the server asking you what drink would you like. The are tons of tea leaves including black tea, yellow tea, green tea, oolong tea and jasmine tea out there but few popular ones that are shared amongst most Yue Cuisines are the Longjing Tea, Pu,er Tea, Tieguanyin Tea,  Xiangpian Tea, etc. These 4 are the most popular and a must have in Yue Cuisines.
